For those that may not want to stay at The Marriott (or if you feel adventurous and want to stay "local") Here is a link to a hotel I just found www.prytaniaparkhotel.com/I found a web based special for $69.00 a night but when I checked reservations a single queen bed was 94.00 per night (still cheaper then the Marriott) Boz and I love to check out the small B & B type hotels (Boutique hotels) Sometimes you can get really good deals and you get to stay in historic surroundings and see a part of The French Quarter that you would not otherwise see

Hmmm... I really like the looks of that! How far is it from the Marriott shuttle?
Oh... and dare I ask where that web special was?

The web special was $49-$69 but it expires 9/30/07
It is about 15 blocks (NOLA blocks are small tho) but I think we are going to do better with the streetcars truthfully - they run 24 hours a day.
Let me look tho - I think I can find you a hotel similar to that - closer to The Frech Quarter at a rate comparable to the Voodoo Marriott rate - just takes a little looking

Sweet! Here's another B&B I found. They're located on Esplanade, about 1/2 way between the French Quarter & City Park: www.fivecontinentsbnb.com/

Jeez, we're kind of into being anonymous...... That doesn't work so well with B&B/Boutique places. I'll keep an open mind, but more than likely will stay at the Marriott.....

Just be careful....you can go one block in NOLA and go from a really nice neighborhood into one you DON'T want to be in, even in daylight hours....... And you can't really tell by the addresses....

^^^ that is kinda the problem - it is hard to tell unless you are with someone that knows NOLA - The French Quarter proper is gonna be fairly tame - but when you get to outlying areas - for instance - do NOT go anywhere near any of the cemetaries at night and truthfully - I think the recommend that you do not go to St. Louis Cemetary even during the day unless you are with a tour group

OK... it's a toss up between the Marriott and Iberville Suites: www.ibervillesuites.com/Rates are about the same (if you book thru Orbitz), but the Iberville is connected to the Ritz-Carlton and rates a little higher on tripadvisor.com's (#29 vs. Marriott's #36). It's all suites, and looks a little cozier/warmer than the corporate Marriott. It's also only a block or so away from the Marriott (by my estimate).

^^^^ definately - I would go for that - you will get a better feel for NOLA there then you would at The Marriott

^^^ I agree....the Iberville will give you more a flavor of NOLA. I would go for that as well, but the Marriot is just such a good rate and with the shuttle and the trolley stop right there, it's hard to pass up...I'll probably just stick with the Marriot. Plus if we have some people stationed there we can always make it a central meeting spot....it's an easy landmark....

For rate comparisons, tripadvisor.com has a nice search function that brings up rates on a variety of online sites. But, mobissimo.com has a ton of additional online reservation services they search and often turn up some great rates.. I have scored some excellent deals using mobissimo.com search engine for hotels.
It's been awhile for me since I was in NO but iirc the general advice around the French Quarter was not to cross Rampart, stay away from cemeteries at night, and remember that if someone looks like they might try to con you or shake you down... they probably will. If a guy bets you $10 he can tell you where you got your shoes, don't take the bet... you will lose.
I'm sure the locals have more specific and more recent advice.
